Position Summary

Reporting to the Calder Center Academic Director, the Conservation and Land Management Specialist coordinates conservation and land management efforts at Fordham University's Louis Calder Center in conjunction with the Director, Assistant Director, and Facilities Director.



The Conservation Land Manager will also oversee the summer intern and volunteer programs as they relate to the Calder Center's land management program.



Essential Functions

  • Manages and conserves the Calder Center's natural areas encompassing approximately 110 acres of woodland, fields, wetlands, roadsides, and lake. Includes conducting ecological restoration projects as needed.

  • Assists the Director in setting land management and research priorities. Prepares monthly Land Management Status reports for the Director.

  • Develops management plans for the control of invasive plant species in various habitats at the Calder Center and coordinates removal of invasive species as needed.

  • Provides data/writes reports evaluating the effectiveness of conservation management strategies, as needed.

  • Organizes and conducts biological surveys of property when necessary including monitoring long-term ecological research plots.

  • Assesses ecological health of wildlife habitats and makes recommendations for improvements aimed at increasing native plant and animal diversity. This will involve monitoring deer

  • populations as well as selection, purchase, and planting of appropriate native species as needed.

  • Maintains equipment collecting weather and aquatic data at the station as well as long-term

  • storage of digital data, datasheets, graphs, photographs, etc. Provides data to researchers (Fordham and non-Fordham)

  • Prepares annual Land Management budget as well as assist with the acquisition of small grants and funding to use for land restoration and conservation projects.

Additional Functions

  • Trains and leads conservation volunteers and/or student volunteers and workers in activities such as tree planting, invasive species removal, and invasive species mapping and monitoring.

  • Engages with the public, offers information, listens to concerns of stakeholders, and acts on information received in consultation with Director and Assistant Director. Promotes awareness of Calder Center land stewardship goals and programs.

  • Represents Louis Calder Center/Fordham University at meetings with other organizations such as EMMA, Native Plant Center, and regional field stations.




Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in natural resources management, biological sciences, or similar environmental sciences degree

  • Three years of related experience.

  • Experience conducting field research including collecting and analyzing ecological data

  • Working knowledge of ecological principles and their application to land

  • management.

  • Working knowledge of native and invasive plant identification, biology, and

  • control methods.

  • Successful candidates should have a knowledge of and commitment to the goals of Jesuit Education.




Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree

  • Experience in natural resources conversation/management

  • Possess a strong team ethic that will support efforts of colleagues

  • Ability to manage a complex set of work priorities




Minimum Starting Salary: $65,000



Maximum Starting Salary: $70,000



Note: Salary is commensurate with qualifications, experience, and skills.
